My volunteering

Japan is a small archipelago nation comprised of thousands of islands. Due to its natural beauty and numerous attractions, it is a premier tourist destination in Asia. Even though Japan is now a very industrialized and modern nation, it still has a rich ancient tradition which remains to this very day.

Regardless of its wealth, Japan still has many opportunities for volunteers like me to come to the nation and make a difference, all while learning about Japanese culture, customs, and traditions.

I volunteer in Japan with a  community who based organizations focused on environmental, agricultural and social issues as well as disaster relief and revival.

My year in Japan

What really was difficult in Japan was the time difference. Japan has 12 hours more than Uruguay (where I live ) .It was hard to try to connect with my family or friends, but technology make everything easier.

Japan , the Empire of the Rising Sun , stands out for the stark contrast between their ancient traditions and high technological advancement, at the forefront , always innovating , always a step ahead. Its traditional culture based on respect and honor , temples , shrines and gardens of incomparable beauty just off skyscrapers of heart attack and towers unsuitable panoramic views to the public make Japan a place of the most exotic and fascinating .

The 12 months i have been in Japan :

I visited much of the center of Tokyo , the Imperial Palace with His gardens , the Tokyo Tower , the Fuji mountain. It seemed I was dreaming.  In addition to visiting the center I visited the city of Tokyo , the Harajuku district where is often concentrated by  youngers wearing their best «manga» suits at any time of day , Shinjuku the shopping market and business district and where is the Metropolitan Goverment Building the town hall from where you get a magnificent panoramic view of the city, Akibahara the neighborhood for technology lovers and a few visits to the Tsukiji market , the most important fish market in the world.

Obviously I visited the best shopping areas of the Japanese capital : Ginza , Shinjuku and Shibuya. The Ginza district  is one of the most expensive areas where all the high-end international brands are present. In the district of Asakusa, in open air markets can be found cheaper items . The duty-free shopping Tokyo are in » International Arcade » and «Kyoto Handicraft Centre » in Kyoto. The best place to buy Japanese technology is the District of Akihabara , Tokyo ( i bought my laptop there) .If you want to buy in Japan are souvenirs, it is best to visit the great stores that are close to temples , where you can buy the most typical crafts of the country. One of these stores is the market located at the entrance of the temple of Asakusa , attended by tourists from around the world in search of typical Japanese items to give away. Among the most commonly memories are Maneki Neko or the Daruka , ceramic kittens with a bell around his neck.

And now the best part , the food. If you ask me the truth I still do not have favorites. I ate different types of Sushi , Sukiyak , Tempura, Soba , and all kinds of fish you can imagine.I think the best thing is not the food itself, but the colors, the ingredients ,the  flavors, .. Drinks I tried were: sake , which is an alcoholic beverage made from rice ; the shochu , and Japanese beers excellent as Kiron , Sapporo, Suntory and Ahasi . I also drink much tea with meals and in different combinations: Genmaicha (green tea combined with roasted brown rice),Hojicha (roasted green tea on charcoal ) and Matcha ( powdered green tea ) .

VOLUNTEERING IN JAPAN:

Throughout my life I had always dreamed of taking a trip to a place far and with another lifestyle. When the idea of taking a gap year became famous I decided to be part of that small group of people who could do that pleasure. Then I decided to stop studying (obviously it was only temporarily ) and I started planning the fantastic journey.I decided to take my gap year in Japan, and i don’t have regrets .

Since the beginning of my trip , Japan was increible. The people , the architecture, the food,…Everything was beyond amazing .The people were very friendly and sympathetic , just most of the time i did not  understand what they were saying to me , lol.. The houses , the buildings ,the mountains all seemed straight out of a Jackie Chan movie Not to mention the food. I ate everything that was in every restaurant or street market . Oh girl, the SUSHI was just AMAZING.If you wanted to try something unusual, that in your country you do not eat , in Japan it is sure that you will find it.The truth is that i loved Japan, and i miss my days there, so i created a super blog just for you. Yes, you! The next gapper. I dare you to try everything that i am going to put here, the food that i tried, the places that i visit an more. Good luck.
